Ctrl+A - opens the Chart of Accounts
Ctrl+F - opens the Find window
Ctrl+W - opens the Write Checks form

Easy date keyboard shortcuts - these work when your cursor is in a date field
T = today
+ - moves you forward one day at a time
- - moves you backward one day at a time
M - moves you to the beginning of the month
H - moves you to the end of the month
Y - moves you to the beginning of the year
R - moves you to the end of the year

Over the years, I have come across a few tips & tricks that have helped me and some of my clients with their QuickBooks software. The following are some of our most frequently used tips.

Customizing the Icon Bar

To delete an icon from the Icon Bar, choose View | Customize the Icon Bar. Then select the item you want to delete and click the Delete button. Then click the OK button to delete the icon and close the window.

 

To add an icon to the Icon bar, open the form or report you want to add, customize it to meet your needs, and choose View | Add xxxx to the Icon Bar. Simply choose an Icon you like and give the item a nice short label. Then click the OK button to add the icon and close the window.

Free Downloadable forms/templates from QuickBooks

Quickbooks.com  template gallery has over 160 forms to choose from.
The newer versions of QuickBooks permit download and import of form styles.

Click on Quickbooks.com to arrive at the forms gallery.

Find the form you prefer, click on the download button, and download to a location on your computer that is easily found.

Import into QuickBooks. From the List Menu > Templates > click on templates again (lower left of window) > Import

The window the opens after import is the "customize form" window within QuickBooks. It is here that you can make changes to fonts, change title names, change column names, change width and length of columns, add fields, etc. Make desired changes then click OK. Return to this "customize form" window at any time to make additional changes
from the List Menu > Templates > Highlight the form you wish to edit  > Click on templates again
(lower left of window) > Edit.

Don't be afraid to make changes, you can always download it again and save under a new name. To delete any form you created and customized: Go to Lists > Templates > highlight a form > press control + D to delete.

There are several 'standard' templates that come with QuickBooks that cannot be deleted.

Calculator Function

This is a little known but highly cool tool. It can be used in any number field that represents dollars or quantities. Highlight the number field and press the = button to bring up the calculator.

 

Perform mathematical calculations on the tape the same way you would a regular calculator (note that it is in calculator not adding machine format). Use C to clear the entry, CC to clear the tape, and ESC to cancel the calculation. Key ENTER or TAB to total the calculation and leave the result in the highlighted field.

Merging Customer, Vendor or Employee Names

You may frequently find that you have inadvertently set up a vendor, customer or employee that has already been set up in the past. This is problematic especially in the case of employees because it will generate multiple tax slips for individual employees. The process to merge them together is fairly simple. Right click on the vendor, customer or employee name that you want to merge into another. Change the vendor name to the exact same name as the other vendor. Click OK. Click YES to confirm that you want to merge the two vendor names under the same name. This will help you keep your books tidy and organized.
